Uganda Democratic Party

Presidential Candidate 2011

ABOUT MAO

Did You Know?

Mao has always overcome being an underdog to election victory by trouncing prominent figures like Brig. Noble Mayombo (R.I.P) for Makerere Guild President, Hon. Betty Bigombe for MP Gulu Municipality and Col. Walter Ochora the latest casuality to Mao's bid of becoming Gulu District Chairman.

A lawyer by training Mao was for ten years (1996-2006) a member of the parliament of Uganda. In Parliament he championed the cause of peace and human rights. In his parliamentary role he emerged as a leading anti-corruption crusader who literally put his life on the line for the people of Uganda.

Norbert Mao emerged as a leading anti-corruption crusader. In 1999 he co-founded the Great Lakes Parliamentary Forum on Peace (Amani Forum) and also the parliamentary Network on the World Bank. These two parliamentary networks with which he still remains in contact have greatly enhanced the contribution of parliamentarians in conflict resolution and development. Mao remains Chairman Emeritus of Amani Forum.

The Democratic President has received many awards and honors. In 1993 Norbert Mao was named Honorary Citizen of the State of Oklahoma, USA, by the Governor of the State. In the same year he was named Honorary Tulsan by the Mayor of Tulsa, Oklahoma. In addition he is an honored Yale World Fellow, proud graduate of the prestigious Yale Global Leadership Program.

Mao has a track record of successfully attaining his goals and being elected into leadership positions by those who recognize his ability to lead. The people of Uganda consistently keep him in office because he puts his words into action.

After a decade in the national parliament, Mao did not seek re-election but instead heeded the call of his constituents to instead contest for the leadership of the district local government then comprising five parliamentary constituencies. Because of his proven track record of listening to the voters and acting in their best interests he won the election with more than 80 percent of the vote.

Mao is a clean politician and the only one who can be taken on his word. In his entire political career, Mao has no spot of corruption, which makes him the only politician who can effectively leading by example.

Mao is the youngest candidate leading the Uganda’s oldest party DP. He'es also the first non-Muganda to lead DP which makes him the only candidate symbolic of change. Mao is change himself and has been able to change the image and re-brand the New DP based on the old principles of Truth and Justice.

Mao has mixed parentage with a Munyankore mother and an Acholi father yet his ability to speak Luo, Luganda, English and Runyankore makes him multi-lingual and the only candidate who can easily bridge the South and the North in Uganda. He is the only candidate who can heal the nation and guarantee a peaceful retirement of the current president without retribution.

Mao is the only other candidate in the 2011 presidential race, who enjoys a block home support in his native Northern Uganda and yet his party DP’s strong-hold is in Buganda where all its current MPs hail from. Mao was also raised in the East yet his mother comes from the West. This makes him the only candidate in this race who can go to all the four regions of Uganda and say he’s going home. This makes Mao the only candidate who can effectively tackle tribalism, nepotism which has derailed Uganda since independence.
